Respect Life

We proclaim that human life is a precious gift from God; that each person who receives this gift has responsibilities toward God, self and others; and that society, through its laws and social institutions, must protect and nurture human life at every stage of its existence.

U.S. Catholic Bishops, Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities, November 2001

Our Respect Life Ministry works to promote respect for human life from conception to natural death and to bring a conversion of mind and heart for all to be open to God’s special gift of life.

Our Respect Life Ministry pursues the promotion of life in four major areas:

  • Public Information and Education to deepen understanding of the sanctity of human life and the humanity of unborn children, the moral evil of intentionally killing innocent human beings—whether at the beginning of life or at its end—and the mission of the Church to witness to and serve all human life.
  • Pastoral Care for women with problems related to pregnancy; for all who have been involved in abortion; for those who are disabled, sick, and dying, and their families and caregivers; for those who have lost loved ones to violent crime; and for those in prison sentenced to death.
  • Public Policy efforts directed to restoring legal protection to the lives of unborn children and those vulnerable to pressures to end their lives by assisted suicide, and to providing morally acceptable alternatives to abortion and assisted suicide.
  • Prayer and Worship directed to participation in the sacramental life of the Church and in programs of communal and individual prayer, that the culture of death that surrounds us today will be replaced by a culture of life and love.

“Even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor are masterpieces of God’s creation.”

Current Events & Opportunities
October is Respect Life Month!

40 Days for Life During the Month of October
2024 Fall Raleigh 40 Days for Life Vigil campaign is running from Wednesday, September 25 – Sunday, November 3 from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Our vigil campaign calendar gives each of us the opportunity to make an appointment with God where we can devote at least one entire hour a week just to Him! Please sign up right now here to make an appointment with Our Lord at Drake Circle so together we can bring an end to the ongoing injustice of abortion and pray for moms in need here in Raleigh. St. Andrew has adopted September 27 and October 27 as dates we will try to staff the vigil.

October 3: Arise from Ash: Purpose Birthed from Pain
Looking for love in all the wrong places, wounded and insecure, Ashley Shuell made a mistake in her choices. In paralyzing fear, she succumbed to the lie that abortion was her only option. That encounter, and the pain that came with it, has driven her to become a voice for the unborn and the mothers who have lost them. Listen as she tells her anointed testimony, in her own words and with her own voice, amplifying God’s faithful and redemptive love that healed her broken heart and birthed purpose from her pain.

Please join local Respect Life Committees on Thursday, October 3 from 7-8:15 p.m. at the Fallon Center at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at 2718 Overbrook Dr., Raleigh. (Enter parking lot from Overbrook Drive; Fallon Center is 2nd brick bldg. on the right.) Suggested for mature middle schoolers to adults.

October 10: World Day Against the Death Penalty
Since our inception in 2022, Catholics for Abolition in North Carolina has hosted October 10th peaceful protests outside Central Prison. This year, the NCCADP is coming to Raleigh as they carry out a Walk for Commutation over the course of days leading up to October 10th, the 22nd World Day Against the Death Penalty. In conjunction with these efforts, CANC wants to add a mile of our own to honor those executed, those still on death row in NC, and to bring awareness to people along the way.

Deacon Joshua Klickman, HLD Coordinator for the Raleigh diocese, will lead a special anti-death penalty rosary in the chapel at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral, starting at 3:30. Then you’ll be invited, with your signs, to walk down Western Blvd to Central Prison (@ 1.2 mile) to stand in solidarity with the 136 men and women on death row.

To RSVP, or for more information, please email Nancy Jones at director@catholicsforabolitionnc.org.

A Pro-Life Prayer

God of all life,
Help us to appreciate the great gift that is human life
formed in your image, a reflection of your holiness.

Help us to recognize you
in all whom you have created:
children not yet born,
families affected by poverty and war,
people of different abilities,
 people from other lands, and
all who are victims of hatred and racism.

Help us to bear witness to the dignity of all whom you have created,
regardless of stage of life,
or wealth,
or ability,
or color, or creed,
for every person is fully equal in your loving eyes.

Share with us your holy knowledge
that we are all your children,
each bestowed with inherent dignity.

May your justice reign forever!

Amen.
